re: Cara Part 19: Sub Mariness- The End Of Days Part I

Somewhere in space…

“…ZRRGGGTT… Polaran refugee vessel…. FZZZZRRT… attack! Repeat we are under attack... GZZZZZRF… engines are dead… life support failing… KZZZZRRRTT… We are requesting aid from any vessels in range… GGGZZZTT… families and children… TZZZZZRRG… not a war craft! Repeat, we are not a war craft... BRRRZZZT… Please, any ships please respond… GGZZRRTTSSSSHHHHHHHH…”

A tiny space ship drifts in the void as the desperate message transmits in vain. It shimmers in an almost liquid way and would normally be considered a beautiful example of Polaran technology. Now it is a smoking wreck with explosions randomly visible from inside through multiple large holes from some powerful energy blasts. The source of those blasts is not hard to find, as looming over them like some horrible shadow is a huge nightmare of a craft. Shaped almost like an open hand, grasping out with five gigantic fingers. Its impossible size renders the Polaran vessel an insignificant speck by comparison.

The huge ship fires one more blast at its helpless prey, as if out of sheer spite, which rocks the already terrified passengers. The ones who are not already dead and strewn about have been rounded up in a huddled mass and are being overseen by a handful of varied and exotic armored warriors from races all across the galaxy. They march around their captives slowly, methodically and callously slaughtering any that attracts their notice.

Their leader is the largest among them and stands silently with his back turned to the carnage. He stares out a viewing port into the vastness of space as his minions terrorize and murder the helpless Polaran captives. He is a huge figure, towering over his own warriors and clad in a surprisingly unimpressive armor that only covers his torso and leaves his muscular arms bare, as if he is stating that he does not need protection. On his left hand is an ominous looking gauntlet of yellow metal and black cloth, it radiates raw power that he somehow seems able to keep under control. His blue tinted skin is rough and leathery looking with the scars of a thousand battles. He makes the very air around him seem ominous and oppressive as he stands silently amid the dead and the cries the dying.

Through the crowd, one of his larger warriors approaches him. She is reptilian, covered in green scales and skimpy leather armor that barely conceals her shapely and muscular form. Over her left shoulder a small but formidable energy canon sits, automatically taking aim at whatever she looks at. Were it not for the bits of well worn armor, and the tiny skulls dangling from her belt, she could almost be considered beautiful. She drags with her a helpless Polaran warrior woman who she throws down to the deck behind her master’s feet.

“Mighty Sonnath…” The reptile woman hisses. “I bring you…the last one.”

The fallen warrior looks up through a swollen eye and spits blood on her captors boot. Her long flowing hair is matted and tangled and her armor is dented and beaten. She rises slowly to her feet cradling a wound to her stomach and in intense pain, yet glaring in utter contempt.

“You never disappoint me, Dachande.” The brute says softly to his reptile minion and yet his voice still strikes fear in all who hear it. He approaches the warrior woman and looks her over. “Thalea… defeated and yet still defiant.”

“Sonnath… you monster!” Thalea growls through her pain. “These people are refugees! They are no threat to you!”

“A monster? No not a monster, nor a villain or a tyrant. I am inevitability.” Sonnath replies calmly. “Your ancestors wrote about it in your sacred ancient texts. ‘The End of Days’ they called it, the destiny of Polaron."

“Ceto made the same claims and we stopped her!” Thalea growls at her captors. “Polaron will never bow to her bastard half-breed son!”

“Brave words.” Sonnath gloats as Dachande smashes her boot into the back of Thalea’s leg, sending her tumbling again to her knees. “You try with all your impressive might, secure in the belief that your cause is just and right, only to fail none the less and be reduced to nothing but ‘brave words’. Even while fear turns your spine to jelly, you still defy me. It is nothing less than I would expect from a Nereid. You have my respect, Thalea.”

Thalea glares at Sonnath despite the fact that he is correct, that inwardly his very presence has her riddled with fear. She glances behind her at the huddled mass of ordinary Polarans; women and children, merchants and builders. They are a small portion of the citizens of Polaron, a world as old as the universe itself, fleeing from their home which is under siege by Sonnath’s forces.

“…The Anchor Stone or the lives of your refugees.” Sonnath states bluntly and motioning his left hand towards the huddled masses behind Thalea. “I assume you have a preference?”

“You… will never have… stone.” Thalea spits in utter contempt.

Sonnath merely tilts his head to one side and holds up his left hand. The yellow metal in his gauntlet almost seems to pulse as he clenches his fingers and closes his fist tight. The gauntlet then glows brightly with a sickly tint of blue and immediately all of the captive refugees cry out in utter anguish. Men, women, and children all suffer an agony like they’ve never known as their very life force is slowly ripped from them and begins flowing into the gauntlet, drawn by its intense glow.

“Alright, STOP!!” Thalea shouts and Sonnath releases his grip and the shrieks of pain cease, followed only by muffled and terrified sobbing and whimpering. “You didn’t let me finish…”

Sonnath tilts his head to the other side, genuinely intrigued as he listens.

“You will never have the Anchor Stone... because you’re evil…” Thalea explains. “…and no evil escapes their sight.”

Before Sonnath can finish turning his head, a boulder sized fist made of hard emerald colored light uppercuts him and sends him flying across the deck and smashing into a far wall. A second emerald beam then rips the section of metal plating from the wall around him and bends it in a tube around his body, leaving only the despot’s head and feet visible. The two light beams converge and remain constant, covering Sonnath in a shell of green hard light as they reinforce the metal restraint.

Sonnath’s gaze follows the beams to their source to see two members of the Green Lantern Corps hovering well above him. Both are humanoid with one appearing to be an actual human with her long orange colored hair kept nicely in a ponytail. She wears a standard Green Lantern uniform and smiles with an almost arrogant confidence. The second is a mix of humanoid and feline, both graceful and fierce at the same time.

“Piece of cake, eh Jadekatt?” The ponytailed one says.

“Depending on what cake is, Cygness…” Jadekatt responds straining. “…I’m not so sure.”

Sonnath grunts and the sound of straining and bending metal can be heard. Instantly the two lanterns react as if they were hit by some unseen force. They both strain and concentrate to keep their beams focused as Sonnath flexes and pushes against his prison.

“RRRRAAH!!” Jadekatt exclaims. “Who is this guy?!”

“Doesn’t…. errrrgh!... matter!” Cygness replies struggling to keep Sonnath restrained. “We are Green Lanterns… we eat guys like him… for breakfast!”

Dachande poises to leap into the fray but catches the look from Sonnath and knows to stand down. He will take care of this himself, and so she bows in submission. Sonnath begins to exert himself in earnest now as the metal around him begins to buckle and tear. Impossible looking ‘cracks’ begin to appear in the hard light surrounding him and as both Lanterns groan out loud in effort, it proves to be too much as metal bends and shreds and hard light shatters in an awesome display of sheer might, and Sonnath is now free.

Cygness is the first to recover but also the first to be attacked. She barely has time to raise a shield bubble herself before Sonnath’s leaping fist impacts and sends her soaring backwards through several bulkheads until coming to rest in a disaster of torn metal and debris.

“OK… didn’t see that coming…” Cygness says through blurred vision and ringing ears. Shaking her head, her vision begins to clear just in time to see Jadekatt hurling through the air like a ragdoll straight at her. The impact sends a new rain of debris crashing down on the pair as Sonnath slowly and menacingly walks towards them.

Regaining their senses, the two Lanterns throw the debris off of them and stand defiant as Sonnath approaches them. In perfect unison the Lantern pair launches themselves at their target, with Cygness forming a pair of terrifying looking hard light claws and Jadekatt dropping a huge and almost cartoonish looking hard light weight from above. Neither of these attacks connect however, as Sonnath simply raises his gauntlet once more and snaps his fist closed. The pale blue light appears and like a torrent, green power erupts from both of the Green Lantern’s rings as their energy is forcibly pulled from them and absorbed into the gauntlet.

Cygness and Jadekatt cry out as their energy, their very will power, is ripped from their rings. Sonnath stands with his gauntlet drawing the power in, like a ravenous leach willing to feed unceasingly as long as food is available.

“Warning, ring power level at fifty percent.” In unison the rings begin to warn of the power drain.

Both Cygness and Jadekatt strain with all their might to move, to get free, to do something… but both are helpless in the face of Sonnath’s sheer might.

“Warning, ring power level at ten percent.”

The strong smack of a heavy metal rod snapping in half on the side of Sonnath’s head barely makes him flinch, but it is enough in interrupt his concentration as he relaxes his fist and the power drain from the Lantern’s rings ceases. The pair falls to the floor as Sonnath turns to find Thalea standing once more to face him. She holds the piece of long steel bar she just broke on the side of his face in one hand and covering the wound in her gut with the other.

“Enough…” Sonnath says, raising his gauntlet at the dying Nereid, but before Thalea can counter and too fast for even Sonnath to react, a bright green bubble of energy swirls and forms around the wounded Nereid. Sonnath can only scowl and watch as in an instant she is whisked away. Phasing right through the ship’s hull and out into space, the bubble accelerates to near light speed and carries Thalea far out of sight, and out of Sonnath’s clutches for the moment.

Sonnath turns to the Lanterns in time to see the glow on Cygness’s ring fade. She lies on her belly, sprawled on the deck with her head raised up. She winks at the tyrant even as she cringes in pain.

“That was a mistake, Lantern.” This is the last thing Cygness hears Sonnath say before unconsciousness takes her.

Dachande and her handful of soldiers step up behind their master as a series of explosions rumble through the crippled vessel.

“Dachande, contact our ally and secure passage to Earth.” Sonnath commands. “Find the stone and bring it to me on Polaron.”

“I will not fail you, mighty Sonnath…” Dachande hesitates. “..But the Lantern could have sent it anywhere in the universe. Why to Earth?”

Sonnath merely turns back towards the viewport to gaze at the infinite universe before him and smiles.

To be continued…
