re: Soonerette #1: It Begins...

“Miss Branduger!! Miss Branduger!!! I found it! I found it!” Jessica yelled as she ran toward Miss Branduger in the research center.

Branduger turned from tagging a new artifact, and peered toward Jessica, “calm down Jessica you found what?”

As she thrust an electronic pad toward Branduger, she stated “I found the butcher block! Look in this newspaper story! We finally can tie that artifact to something.”

“Great work Jessica! Why don’t you go and catalogue the document with the artifact. I’m going up to my living quarters to check on something.” Branduger said as she turned and walked up the stairs with the electronic pad.

She muttered as she entered her living quarters, throwing the pad on the bed, and then turn and holds her head as she cursed a small curse. “Why that story? Why now? There was enough contradictions in the evidence, why now? Why that particular story?” thoughts pounded through her head as she paced back and forth…..

“Johnny, do you have to hit every bump in Oklahoma?” Jamie yelled while poking her head through the window of the stagecoach.

“Sorry, ma’am. But we have a long way to the capital, and you said you wanted to check out Chocksow Town before getting there. We’ll have to stay overnight, but I want to get you there early enough to eat.” Johnny yelled back toward her as he whipped the reins harder.

As Jamie sat back down in the coach, she looked at her young assistant Florence. “So what exactly did daddy do in Chocksow, Florence?” she asked.

“Your daddy many years ago passed through as a marshal, and tried to figure out what was going on with the tribes near it. They had some sickness, and soon some died.” Florence rattled off the account as if she was giving a report to a judge or prosecutor. “He looked and looked and couldn’t find anything. He went back a few times, but never found anything. Soon the tribe was moved to another reservation, and he didn’t have a reason to go back. He did help fund some the town for about a year, since the railroad was supposed to go through it. At the last second it was moved a little farther north.”

“Florence, wake me when we get close.” Jamie told Florence as she closed her eyes.

“Miss Jamie, we are about there.” Florence said as she patted Jamie’s lap to wake her.

“Almost there? Are you sure?” Jamie responded. “Did Johnny get lost again?”

“No ma’am. It’s there over the hill.” Florence said.

As they entered the town, Jamie looked out. It was basically a ghost town now. She could see a general store, a stable, a motel, butcher’s shop and basically a sheriff’s office. “Are you sure this is the town?” she called out to Johnny.

“Yes, ma’am. It’s the town.” Johnny said, “I’ll pull up to the motel, and let you check in.”

As the coach, stopped, Johnny jumped down and opened the carriage door. “Here you go ma’am”, as he held Jamie’s hand as she stepped out. He was still taken back by her stunning look. A white shirt, with her saddle skirt, and boots to match.

Jamie turned and told Florence, “Please get us some rooms for the night.” Turning to Johnny, “Try the stables over there and see if we can get food and water for the horses, and store the coach.”

“Yes, Ma’am.” they both said in unison. Florence headed inside and Johnny took the coach to the stable.

As she watched the coach leave, she heard a rough voice behind her “What can we do for you little lady? We don’t get many visitors here.”

She smiled as she turned, “Just staying for the night. Daddy used to talk so wonderfully about this town. I just had to see it on my way to the capital.”

The sheriff looked at her, “Don’t stay too long. This town is about dead. We have a few coaches come through for mail and food deliveries, but besides that we’ve been pretty isolated. Nothing that a young lady as yourself would be interested in.”

“Thank you sheriff, I’ll take that kindly advice since we plan on just staying the night and heading out in the morning.” She smiled and quietly tipped her hat to the sheriff.

She walked up the stairs into the motel. As she entered the doors, she smiled as she heard her boots echo each time they hit the wooden floor. “Nothing like the sound of boots on a wooden floor” she thought to herself. She looked up and saw Florence talking to a lady in her mid-40s.

Florence turned at the sound of her boots, “Miss Jamie, we got three rooms on the second floor.”
Jamie, smiled, and said to the owner, “Thank you so much for the rooms. Is there some place we can eat before turning in for the night?”

The older woman stated “Dinner will be served in thirty minutes, you eat what we eat. No fancy menu at this motel. We don’t get a lot of patrons.”

“That will do ma’am. When my coach driver, Johnny, comes in please show him to his room. We look forward to enjoying Chocksow’s cuisine.” Jamie said as she walked up to the second floor.

Florence gave Jamie a key, and took the room down the hall. Jamie glanced around and slowly unlocked the room. As the door opened she noticed some dust on the floor, but overall nothing fancy. It had a bed, dresser, closet and a window. She put up her bags and drew some water to wash her face. The water was a little dirty, but she never expected it be like home. The ranch was always clean and daddy made sure that everyone was treated to the utmost of his ability. She pulled some files out of a bag, sat down on a chair and started reading.

There was a knock on the door, and as she opened it she saw Florence standing there. She stood there in a vest, shirt and jeans. A far cry from Florence’s usual business look, but she loved to “dress down”.
Florence commented “Ma’am, it’s time for dinner, I thought I’d put something comfortable on. I haven’t seen Johnny yet.”

“I’m sure he’ll show up. Let’s go down to eat.” Jamie said as she locked the door behind her. The room was a standard “dining” room, four tables with four chairs. The owner and another gentleman were at one table, and the sheriff was watching them from another table.

The owner got up, and introduced herself to Jaime, “Dearie, why don’t you and your companion sit here. You can call me Maybelle, my husband’s name is Frank, and you already met Sherriff Tom earlier.” She said as she pointed to a table and then to her husband and Sherriff. She soon left to go into the kitchen.

As they sat down, Frank came on over “Ma’am, your driver said he noticed something with one of your reserve horses. He’s looking at the shoes now, and said not to worry, he’ll join us later. Maybelle will make sure that he gets fed.”

“Thank you so much for the hospitality, Frank”, Jamie said.

Maybelle soon showed up with their dinner, it was some meat, potatoes and beans. “Thank you ma’am” Jamie said as both she and Florence took the plate.

As they ate, Tom got up and walked over to their table, “Mind if I sit? We don’t get young ladies here very often.”

Florence pointed to a seat, “Be our guest Sherriff. You got a nice little quiet town here.”

“We enjoy it,” he said as he sat down.

As she ate, she looked up and asked the Sherriff, “What type of meat is this, I don’t recognize it. It definitely has a distinct taste?”

Sherriff Tom let out a giant laugh, “Yeah, I guess you wouldn’t have eaten any. When the reservation was near here, the braves told me of a breed of animal that was similar to a jackrabbit but not one. They told me the great spirits in the sky blessed them with a cross of a rabbit and squirrel. That as long as they ate it, then they would be well fed and prosper.”

“It definitely is different, Tom. I’m surprised my daddy never told me about it.” Jamie said while taking a bite of the meat.

“That’s right; didn’t you mention earlier that your dad came around here some in the past?” Tom asked Jamie while raising an eyebrow.

“He was a Marshall most of my life in the territory. He used to tell us of Chocksow, and how it was mistreated when the railroads changed course.” Jamie informed Tom with a smile.

Tom, shifting in his chair, looked at her, “I remember him! Strong, loyal man to the law. Where is he now?”

“He retired after the land rush, and soon struck oil. About a year ago he died, and we are heading to the capital to sort out some of his business affairs.” Jamie told him as she now shifted in her chair.

“That is bad, he was a good man.” Tom replied.

The rest of the conversation was over simple things like the reservations, railroad and the different land rushes.

“Thank you so much, for the dinner conversation.” Jamie said as they were finishing up.

Tom waved over Frank, “Frank, where’s the kid that came through with these young ladies is?”

Frank walked over, “He’s finishing up. Chuck said they had to wait until the fire got hot enough for molding the shoes. Last I saw they were over there laughing and joking.”

Frank looked at Jaime, “Ma’am he said don’t worry, get some sleep, and he’ll see you in the morning.”

“Thank you gentleman for the evening, Florence and I will be heading up to retire for the evening.” Jamie said as she and Florence left the room.

As they walked up the stairs, Florence looked at Jamie and said quietly “Did Awenasa ever tell you of a story like that of the spirits feeding the tribes here?”

Jamie looked at Florence and shook her head slightly in a sideways fashion. “Please go over the documents and take precautions to keep them safe.”

Florence replied “Yes, ma’am.”

The both entered their individual rooms. Jamie soon undressed and got into her night gown. She looked at the bed, and wondered how filthy her gown would be in the morning.

All of a sudden, she heard Florence scream; she grabbed her colt, and ran out of the room. As she looked down the hall, she saw Tom holding an unconscious Florence. “Sherriff, what happened?” She exclaimed and fell unconscious herself at the end of the sentence.

Jamie slowly awoke to see Florence next to her chained to a wall, and she, herself chained to a wall. She looked around the room; Florence was saying something in shock. She looked up and there in the middle of the room was a butcher’s block. The wall had many different tools used for carving and preparing meat. As she looked closer, she saw the clothes and the blood on the floor. That’s Johnny’s clothes she thought, where is he? Her eyes followed the table up behind it, and she cried out in shock as she saw Johnny’s head.

Florence looked at her. “Jamie, get ahold of yourself! You hair has a pin in it. I know you know how to pick a lock with all those times you snuck out of the house.”

Jamie knew she was right, but before she could do anything the Tom walked in with another individual.

“Ma’am, this gentleman’s name is Chuck. He had to privilege of preparing your meat for you last night.” as he pointed to Johnny’s head.

Tom walked over to Florence and rubbed his hand through her hair. “We don’t get such good looking young ladies here in town since the railroad left. This will be a pleasure for Chuck to prepare the meat tonight.”

He got up and moved over to Jamie, “And you will be prepared last. Yes, I remember your dad and the trouble he caused with coming here, and it would be a shame for such a fancy lady to go first. It’s a shame that you gown is bloody, but, your coach driver didn’t clean up after himself.”

She sat there watching as Chuck and Tom tied Florence to a butcher block and took turns. Her screams of horror ringing through Jamie’s ears. Jamie tried to fight through the tears and anger as she was chained to the wall.

Tom came on over, she could smell the stench of his sweat, and the smell of Florence’s blood on him. She couldn’t look as she tried to close her eyes. He held her chin, “and you Miss Jamie will be next.” Tom got up and left the room, turning and grinning at her.

Chuck reached for the wall, and got down some tools. He started carving Florence. Jamie burned with anger, fear and disgust. As she sat there watching her friend carved she remembered Florence’s words “get ahold of herself”.

She pulled the pin from her hair, and fought back at the tears as she worked on the chains at her wrist. Chuck was there singing and cutting away like he was carving a deer shot on the ranch ignoring her. After a few minutes she heard the click, and the chains were unlocked.

She quietly looked around and found a meat hook, she noticed the recent blood on it, and wondered if it was Johnny’s. She thought about it. She moved slowly up behind Chuck. He was taking too much pleasure in his work. She swung the hook at Chuck from his side. The hook went into his left eye, and as she finished the swing, it crossed through the right eye and exited through his right ear. He clutched his head and then fell on the ground. She reached for the meat cleaver and pulled it over her head. Swinging it down toward his neck, Chuck’s head began rolling away from his body.

She leaned over Florence’s body and said a prayer for peace for her soul. Jamie looked around and in the pile of Johnny’s clothes was his gun belt and colt. She put on the gun belt, and viewed the colt. Six bullets where in the colt. She looked at it. It was one of her daddy’s that she gave to Johnny as a gift for his loyalty and friendship.

She started walking, cursing that she left her boots in the room. She thought of Awenasa, and how she walked barefoot many times around the ranch. Crouching at the door, she looked outside and the street was clear. She worked her way over the Sherriff’s office just to find it was empty. “Where can he be?” Jamie thought. She looked to the motel, and there was a new buggy there.

She quietly walked over to the motel, making sure that no one saw her. As she entered the motel this time, there was no smile, and sound of boots. Her bare feet made no sound. Maybelle and Frank wasn’t at the front desk, the light was on in the dining room. She slowly crouched walking to the dining room, as she heard Tom’s voice talking.

“So you are on your honeymoon? Heading to Okie City?” he was saying as he was laughing. She fought the urge to vomit at the sound of his voice. How could this man calmly talk to a couple after doing that to Florence? Was the bride next on his list after her? She could feel the disgust growing. She fought the disgust down being thankful that they had enough “Johnny meat” that they didn’t check the butcher shop for fresh meat. She reached down and quietly cut a patch out of the bottom of her gown. As she tied it around the lower part of her face to cover her nose and mouth, she almost vomited. She forgot the blood of Johnny and Florence was on it.

She got closer to the door, and saw Maybelle and Frank at the far table, Tom was near the door talking to the other couple that couldn’t really see. The anger grew, she ran to the door. She dove through the door tumbling and coming up in a crouch, the gun pointing to Maybelle, two shots rang out from her Colt, and Maybelle fell. She turned her wrist slightly like daddy taught her, at this angle, you didn’t need to turn it too much or you’ll miss her daddy said. Two more shots, and Frank slumped in his chair.
She then spun around and saw Tom starting to stand. Two more shots rang out before Tom could draw his weapon.

The honeymooners looked at her. The bride shrieking in terror, her husband frozen in his tracks. They both looked at Jamie standing there in what appeared to be a red skirt, white top, red bandana, and red hair while holding a colt on them.

Jamie felt a tremor in the ground that made the honeymooners lose their footing. She was praying that these were city slickers that couldn’t count how many shots she fired. She looked at them. In a commanding tone she said “Stay there until I leave town or the spirits will bring vengeance and deliver your souls to hell”.

She took the dead bodies out to the couple’s buggy. She threw them into the back. She then went to get the bodies of Chuck, Florence and what remained of Johnny. She then drove out of town in the buggy, her white spare horse tied to the back.

She drove all night to the nearest town, Olkmony. It was early in the morning. Some drunks littered the dirt road through town. She left the cart at the Olkmony’s Sherriff office. She took the spare horse and road back to Chocksow Town. Soon the Olkmony Sherriff showed up with a group of men. Jamie was found in a skirt and denim shirt, she had just enough time to get back, change and out of town. She was found wandering aimless in shock outside of town by the posse.
The honeymooners identified a red headed woman dressed in crimson and cream, killed the Sherriff, and town’s people. The Sherriff found the “butcher” shop.

Jamie was taken back to Olkmony, where she was allowed to clean up. She was then “escorted” to the Sherriff’s office.

It was a younger Sherriff, and she could tell he was new at his job. “Ma’am, what happened there?” he asked.

Jamie, forced tears out of her eyes, “Sherriff it was horrible, we were jumped by the townspeople. My attendant and driver told me to run and not look back. I wandered aimless outside of town.”

“Did you see the honeymooners enter the town?” he asked.

“Yes, I did. I couldn’t get to them. The Sherriff was there quickly, and he was the one who attacked Florence as I was leaving.” Jamie said holding her head in her hands and forcing the tears in her eyes.

“After a few hours, I saw a spirit in crimson and cream move about the town. The next thing I saw was a driverless buggy leaving the town. You found me awhile later.” Jamie continued.

“Thank you ma’am, for your time and patience. You are free to go.” the Sherriff remarked as he was escorting her out.

“Can I go home Sherriff or stay here in town?” Jamie asked.

“Yes, you can go home. The woman we are looking for had red hair and you certainly have dark hair. You can’t possibly be her.” he said.

Miss Branduger walked over to the bed, and picked up the electronic pad. She looked down at it. The news article that Jessica found identified a female “ghost” clad in crimson and cream. There was a picture of the “butcher shop”.

Miss Branduger, paced back and forth, tears in her eyes, as she remembered Johnny and Florence. The love that they showed her dad and herself all those years. She held back the vomit once again as she remembered Johnny and how her and Florence was “fed” him that night. The look of shock, horror and screams of Florence during those final hours that plague her dreams at night even to this day. She decided that day that sometimes the law can’t protect the innocent. Her daddy must have known something was happening in that town, but working within the law couldn’t prove anything. She remembered reading the newspaper, and thought that this Crimson and Cream ghost would someday appear again.

She picked up a bottle of champagne, and walked back down to the research room. She could hear the laughter, joy and pride of the intern research team as they rejoiced over finding a connection to this “ghost” that they have been researching.

“So who wants to celebrate?” she asked as the group approached her and she popped the cork on the bottle.
