re: Cara Part 20: Sub Mariness- The End Of Days Part II

0
Earth

Deep out at sea, beyond the view of the skylines of Gotham or Metropolis, a passenger liner founders helplessly. Billowing smoke rises from the aft quarter and if anyone was around, they would be inundated by the terrified screams of the passengers running all around the upper deck. Another sudden explosion from deep below decks rocks the ship and it lists violently to port. As passengers scramble to the starboard side, their screams become a cacophony of curses and prayers. Each one wailing as they become convinced that this is the end.

“Stand fast, mortals!” A female voice bellows through the air above their collective cries. “The sea shall not claim you vessel this day!”

The ship then instantly stops its roll over and as the passengers cling to anything bolted down in a kind of stunned silence; the ship rights itself once more in the water. The passengers all slowly rise to their feet in apprehension. As if one wrong step from any of them will send the ship rolling over once more. A small boy peers over the edge of the railing in wonderment and tugs at his father’s sleeve.

“Daddy, Daddy! Look!” The boy says excitedly.

The father peers over the railing and is astonished by what he sees. A layer of beautiful sea-green ice seems to grow from the waterline of the ship’s hull. At least a foot thick, it grows up the hull coating it and sealing any holes and ruptures. The ice also extends out across the water from the ship and soon the entire vessel rises off the surface of the water, held fast in a perfectly boat shaped iceberg.

The passengers remain in their stunned silence, unsure of whom or what has saved them. In the modern world of heroes powerful enough to move the Earth and villains strong enough to destroy it, people have become used to the uncertainty of any situation. One man turns to look out from the ship across the water and is awestruck by what he sees. Others see him and follow his gaze and are also stunned into silence at the sight.

A beautiful olive skinned woman with a shimmering sea-green aura around her slowly rises into the air from the water. Her armor appears skimpy yet impressive as it covers her perfectly shaped mid-section, leaving her shoulders and thighs bare. Her armored boots have small wing like appendages on the heels and instantly everyone on the ship cheers at the sea goddess; for there is no other term to describe the Princess Ianeira of the fabled world of Polaron. Few know her by this name, for on Earth she is simply called the mighty Sub Mariness.

Gently, Ianeira floats through the air above the adoring passengers. She smiles and waves at the cheering crowd as she revels in their joy at being spared a watery fate. The Captain of the vessel steps out onto the observation platform just off the bridge as the Sub Mariness lands amid him and his bridge officers.

“Ho, Captain.” Ianeira says in a regal manner.

“Thank you Sub Mariness.” The Captain responds awkwardly shaking Ianeira’s hand. “Without your help we would have been in serious trouble.”

“You are welcome.” Ianeira states. “But tell me Captain, what ails your vessel that it would founder in my waters?”

“This may sound crazy, but some of the passengers said we were hit by a glowing green meteor.” The Captain responds.

“And what is a ‘meteor’?” Ianeira asks.

“You know… like a rock from outer space falling from the sky?” The Captain answers a little embarrassed at having to explain what a meteor is to a literal demi-goddess.

“Take me to this ‘meteor’.” Ianeira commands.

“It smashed into the aft deck.” Another officer states nervously. “If it didn’t go straight through us, it probably ended up in the engine room but that’s flooded now. We can’t get to it.”

“I can.” Ianeira says with authority and with a single leap she raises high into the air over the side of the ship and dives perfectly and without a splash into the water below.

Effortlessly and with very little motion, Ianeira glides through the water underneath the huge ship. Peering through the thick ice now covering the ship’s hull, she can see a clear ‘exit wound’ where something punched through the thick steel.

Taking a moment to ensure her ice covering has indeed successfully plugged the hole, the Sub Mariness turns and dives deep towards the ocean floor in search of the mysterious meteor.

It does not take her long to find it as its impact crater on the sea bed is at least a hundred yards in diameter, and within it the murky silt still hangs heavy and obscures the goddess’s view. Ianeira holds her right arm straight out to the side and her mystical trident instantly appears in her hand. She spins the weapon in her hand faster and faster until a current of water is formed which blows away the floating debris to reveal what lies beneath it.

“No…. It cannot be!” The Sub Mariness utters in stunned amazement. “Thaleia!”

Lying unconscious, battered and broken on the ocean floor is the body of a woman almost as large and impressive as the Sub Mariness herself. Clad in the same style of armor that Ianeira wears except it too shows signs of savage combat. Like a torpedo, Ianeira races to the side of the fallen woman whom she knows all too well, for she is one of Ianeira’s warriors known as the Nereids.

Ianeira kneels next to the fallen woman and cradles her in her arms, and even underwater, the tears from Ianeira’s eyes are unmistakable.

“No… no….” The mighty Sub Mariness sobs as the woman opens her eyes, barely alive. “Thaleia! No… Lie still….”

Thaleia looks up at Ianeira and manages to raise her hand and place it on Ianeira’s cheek. “Ia… Ianeira… the time… has come. You… you must…” Her words begin to trail off.

“What, Thaleia? What must I do…?” Ianeira cries desperately, as if trying to ‘will’ Thaleia to live.

Wincing in pain, Thaleia looks at her beloved Sub Mariness one last time. She places a glowing, mystical looking stone in Ianeira’s hand. “Lay… Layline… He is… he is coming…”

“Who, Thaleia? Who is coming?!” Ianeira sobs and clutches the stone in her palm.

“S-Sonnath is coming… he’s coming..” And with that, Thaleia dies in Ianeira’s arms.

Ianeira’s eyes fill with tears as she roars with rage and she holds Thaleia close and tight. Sea creatures for hundreds of miles scurry and flee from the sound of her anguish and anger.

At last silence falls once more and Ianeira’s expression turns to intense resolve as she gazes up towards the surface and sees the silhouettes of several ships approaching the stricken liner. Knowing the ship and passengers would be safe, she gazes at her open palm and the glowing stone within it. It radiates a rainbow light of colors from within it and under different circumstances would be quite beautiful. She knows this stone and what it is for and she tucks it within the folds of her armor and cradles the body of her loyal warrior and friend in her arms.

“Thalea…” Ianeira says solemnly. “I bid you take your place in the waters of Polaron… the waters of all worlds, where the brave shall live forever. Nor shall we mourn, but rejoice for those that have died the glorious death.”

As Ianeira finishes her prayer, Thalea’s body slowly fades with soft glowing wisps that join with the surrounding water until all that is left is a resolute and angry princess. As multiple rescue ships close in on the liner above, she suddenly blasts like a torpedo through the water towards the city of Metropolis.

To be continued...
