2013-Metropolis-Tomorrow District

Bright sun shone down over Tomorrow Harbor, yachts and speedboats floating in the fresh waters of the River Quay. Fishermen loved this area for its unspoiled environment and schools of trout that were prevalent before swimming upstream to spawn. Not surprising, LexCorp had been after this area for years, but so far a host of environmental protection groups had managed to stay one injunction ahead of the horde of lawyers that Luthor employed.

Air rippled in the middle of the harbor while water began bubbling as its component atoms were split- causing the released hydrogen to ignite. All in all, the harbor seemed to explode into a column of flame shooting up over a thousand feet into the air. The ‘whoosh’ of the explosion blew out eardrums and windows all around the area. People looked on in horror as the flames took shape in what could only be described as a fiery spear.

Impossibly, the fire started to solidify and cool. Blazing nuclear fire became steel and concrete. Reflections formed into windows. Bridges extended into the harbor almost as if they had always been there. Architecture formed in place of shade trees, fountains in what had been a protected marshland, and finally modern arches were brushed into reality by some mad god putting the finishing touches of industry where an untainted Garden of Eden had lain seconds before.

People began to run, frightened of what new terror from beyond was coming to torture their lives before the Justice League arrived to throw it back into the deep reaches of wherever it had come. Higher and higher, flames were replaced by skyscraper. It had a weird, almost organic feel to it. Totally unlike the surrounding skyline, the garish super-modern lines clashed harshly with the more traditional construction around it.

STAR Labs was reading massive quantum shifts in the area and was already dispatching interception and containment teams. Though it had run operations from its new campus on the other side of the island for only a few weeks, numerous drills had trained rapid response crews to get to their emergency stations efficiently and quickly.

The fire was almost gone, replaced by the barest of light as a point formed at the apex of the building, looking down at the rest of the city with the intimidation of a bully overseeing a playground full of children with lunch money all just ripe for the taking.

Flames collapsed into themselves and then seemed to reconsider, bursting out in a ring of energy over Metropolis. Silver sparks of time and space passed over the wreckage of the district, repairing all of the damage. Windows were replaced while people stopped running in fear, confused as to why they were so out of breath. Vehicles racing to the locus of the temporal rip were run over viciously, vanishing completely only to re-materialize back in their hangars – having never left in the first place.

One businessman, late back from his lunch from the accounting department of Starr Industries looked over at the Science Spire, sitting innocently in the middle of Tomorrow Harbor, just like it had for years. It represented LexCorp’s answer to STAR Labs and Luthor’s desire to explore what hadn’t been discovered yet.

What had he been thinking? He couldn’t recall now, it had been important. He checked his watch, smiling that impossibly he had ten extra minutes to get back. He stopped running, sweating in his cheap off-the-rack suit and tie.

Time was on his side for once.

Maybe today wouldn’t be so bad after all.

*

This was bad: damn, damn, damn. This was very bad.

Grace could feel the wind blowing her ponytail, hearing it smack against her form-fitted body armor. Luckily, her polarized composite sunglasses had protected her from the bright raging light of the skull fuck in the fabric of reality. Clearly, this was not what she had planned. She tried to will herself to fly, but her suit’s systems were either down or overloaded.

A trip through the ass-end of a temporal tear would do that. Wonderful.

Her sunglasses’ HUD detected others in her vicinity, facial recognition locking blindingly fast making her situation seem to be in slow motion.

Likely, the adrenaline helped too.

She tried to focus, as her parents had taught her. She followed her honed instincts, doing a mental roll call, making sure everyone who had flown in was here.

She clicked off the list and their statuses as they fell, all while the water was closing fast. Finally, there was only one thing to do.

She screamed.

2037-Metropolis-LxCorp Board of Directors

The finely manicured nails of Alexa Luthor wanted dearly to tear out the throat of the CEO of LxCorp, Daniel Carter. Her family had lost control of the once great mega-corporation when WayneTech had attempted to sell it off. Since the family’s patriarch, Lex Luthor, had been in prison at the time, he had been unable to stop it.

Only through manipulation, murder, extortion, and all of the other family values that made the Luthor Clan what it was today, had LexCorp been able to replace even a fraction of the resources that made it a force to be reckoned with. But, to leverage the money to build it back up, Lex had been forced to quietly make an initial public offering so that it would no longer be privately held. He had assumed that no one could manage to take him on in the corporate arena. Unfortunately, Lex had gotten tunnel vision and not been aware of various charities, holding corporations, and funds slowly gaining control of his dearly held LexCorp.

But, you see, super heroes apparently needed money too.

Suddenly, WayneTech had a seat on the board, then without warning the Atlantean Crown had cashed in an immense amount of capital with its sights set on LexCorp. One chair after another started falling to allies of the heroic fold: Queen Industries, the Delphi Consortium, Styger Robotics, and even Olympus Holdings. While Lex had been egotistically arrogant that even the Gods of Mount Olympus had come for him, he knew he had to diversify the board in order to stave off a hostile takeover. Alexa, though being born out of wedlock, had been accepted by Lex when she had confronted him first as a savvy businesswoman and then as his daughter. She had timed it perfectly, as he had been desperate for an ally. Over the years, she had spoken as his proxy and defended the keys to the castle while he inevitably ended up in prison time and again.

Finally, on his death bed she had managed to strangle control of his seat on the board by literally strangling the old, cancerous man he had become. She could still see the hate and betrayal in his eyes as the death rattle escaped his already rotting body. With her father’s passing, more villainous groups had arisen to take over seats on the board. The Golden Lion Throne of the Kahndaqi Empire with Empress ReignStorm often sending a proxy, Central City Securites acting as the Rogues financial arm, International Assets- which was a villainous monetary cooperative headed by the Calculator also known as Noah Kuttler, and lastly TRI Assets Management, the League of Assassins’ financial espionage arm led by Arianna Head, Ra’s al Ghul’s newest daughter to come of age.

In essence, she found herself fighting a two front war. The first on the board to keep the heroic factions from destroying her family’s generational legacy and second within her own ranks of allies: to keep from killing them and stop them from trying to kill each other.

Even with her allies in place, she couldn't the Board from rebranding the corporation “LxCorp” passing it off as a “phoenix rising from the ashes”.

While she didn't regret bringing many of the villains on at LxCorp, she did hate herself for bringing One Eyed Jack Holdings on. They were the legitimate front for the Wilson Family. If only she hadn't needed Deathstroke’s money so badly at the time. All she had to do was look across the table at painfully blue eyes of Rose Wilson, the assassin’s daughter, and just know she was targeting her with that abominable artificial eye of her’s. Rose was a deadly killer all her own, but wasn’t to be trifled with at the director’s conference table.

Each of them had spies and espionage deeply embedded with each other’s factions. She knew she had a mole in her own group, but damned if she could figure out who it was. She had already killed a half-dozen people that she was sure were the traitor, but information kept leaking.

Just like the information Daniel Carter was reading now, dammit.

“Alexa?” Daniel Carter asked.

She snapped out of her reverie and smiled cordially at the handsome, roguish man. “I’m sorry, Daniel. You caught me trying to figure out just where you had gotten that little tidbit of information. My department is still trying to figure that one out ourselves.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow and sighed, “I understand, Alexa, but we are talking about twenty billion euros of capital, nearly thirty-five billion US. That’s billion with B.” Daniel wasn’t one to be trifled with, unlike his father, the once superhero Booster Gold.

Other members of the board looked at her for answers as well.

The Queen sisters; Mia and Grace, both blonde except Grace, the younger of the two, had deep forest green eyes while Mia had pale blue ones and with their tailored business jackets and short skirts showing off toned legs made Alexa green with envy. Just how the hell did they stay in such good shape? Alexa barely had time with the hours she pulled. It just made Alexa jealous that these two supermodels never knew what hard work was.

The WayneTech representative today, as it was a rotating seat, was Tim Wayne. The handsome man with a build that told Alexa she would love to study every millimeter of his body. He had been a long time leader at WayneTech, as Bruce Wayne had stepped into gradual retirement when he had married the charity vixen Selina Kyle. While they lived in Europe in seclusion, he had taken over as head of the company and was every bit the playboy his adopted father was.

Sometimes LxCorp’s Chief Operating Officer, Stephanie Black stood as a proxy for WayneTech as well, when Tim couldn’t be bothered to show up. Both of them looked to be in their mid-thirties, even though being in their late forties and every bit the fitness models their patriarch Bruce had been.

Her Majesty Queen Coryphaena I of the Atlantean Crown and head of the Delphi Consortium, who controlled two votes on the board (the cunt!) and still looked to be in her mid-twenties- even though she was in her fifties now. Alexa still had a private investigator dedicated to just finding out her beauty secrets and refused to just accept “she’s a goddess, I swear.” Alexa had known she was a “goddess”, that was why she had hired an investigator in the first place, dammit. She watched as an imperious eyebrow rose at her, waiting for the multi-billion dollar answer.

Chancellor Kathryn Oteri-Jones of the Olympian Council with her brunette hair accentuated by stardust twinkling in it and a lean body so beautiful that it even made a heterosexual female consider switching teams- which was fair considering her literal demigoddess status. What did a goddess need with money anyway?

Jenny Styger, raven haired with gold highlights and dark eyes which Alexa knew were observing and recording everything. The robotics and cybernetics genius had been pursued for years by her father and had even acted as a distraction to him while WayneTech gained that first, initial, and very painful seat on the board.

Even her own allies made a show of looking on at her, waiting for the answers they already knew.

The Most Holy Empress ReignStorm of the Golden Lion Throne with her perfect sculpted looks and cold dark eyes. Alexa knew her origins were both sinister and dark, yet she had many arguments with this chosen of the most powerful six ancient Egyptian gods. The power contained in her body was terrifying, since the previous holder of all that power had personally killed millions with his bare hands.

Arianna Head with her dark exotic looks and almond eyes measuring her for a bodybag, already having determined the safest place to hide her body.

If these people thought they had her outgunned, they had another think coming. She was the daughter of Lex Luthor, time to show them all what that meant.

“Well as I have already stated, Daniel, my people are still going over the information and the records, but it would appear to be various black projects and we need to decrypt those information streams. Without the passcodes, you know how long that will take.”

He answered slowly, “Yes, I do.” Daniel tapped a telltale on his holographic panel on the table top, “Stephanie, have you and Luke finished yet?”

The speaker embedded in the shiny black top replied, “Just finished the download from the Watchtower, Daniel. We’ll come in.”

The Watchtower, oh fuck, Daniel had turned the files over to the Justice League’s Analysis Unit. The team was famous for building airtight prosecution cases for the Federal Courts. She needed an extraction now!

She tapped her ring, paging her assistant. Praying, she would arrive in time.

The door was opened by a younger redhead that Alexa had passed in the corridors from time to time, Samantha McRae, one of the college interns. She was far more intelligent than she let on, and often resisted Alexa’s attempts to turn her to her side. The girl was still a teenager; Alexa knew she would have time yet to turn Sam over to the more pragmatic side of the ongoing battle.

A door opened on her side of the room, her own assistant, Carrie Kelley came in as if she hadn’t just sprinted down the hallways, responding to Alexa’s distress call. The former gymnast with her pageboy cut of the reddest hair Alexa had seen besides her own. But, where Alexa’s own locks went nearly to the middle of her back, Carrie could have passed for a boy with her very short hair, if her clothes weren’t tailored to show off her curves. Carrie swept up beside her and whispered in her ear.

Alexa pretended to be surprised, “Really? You’re sure a possible attack at the Spire?” She pretended to be apologetic to the board, “My intelligence sources have reported a bomb scare at the Science Spire. Can we table this till the next meeting, I promise to have answers by then.”

Daniel clearly wasn’t happy, “All right, Alexa, but next time we need to know what is going on over there.”

Alexa answered honestly, “You’ll know in no time, that I promise you.”
